Awa Sinyan is the founder of Mira Impex a company that specializes in raw cashew nut [RCN] and Groundnut export, an industry dominated by male players even though most of the produce harvested by woman; she strives to be key player in the Gambian Agric industry. Awa grew up in a household of traders. Her father was one of the biggest traders in the town of Bansang, a central town in Central River Region of the country. In describing her childhood, Awa said: My development as a child could be characterized as being exposed to both formal education and at the same time working as prodigy in the general food commodities trading business under the guidance of my father. It was regular routine for us to come from school and go straight to the family shop. This was the only life I knew from the age of five (5). Ultimately, this led to my passion for trading becoming part of my DNA!” Awa took the bold steps to move from the rural commodities trading sphere to formalizing her business and is now an exporter of groundnuts and cashews. She made the final decision to do so by resigning from her commercial banking job to concentrate full time in Agri-business. Awa is leading the women trail in this very male-dominated industry and is hopeful that more women will venture in the Agri-business. Reach her on: miraimpex15@gmail.com.
